The Bakti movement, coming in the wake of the collapse of the ancient Vedism and Vedanta and also Buddhism and Jainism brought also along with it a NEW NOTION of Moksa that gets well articulated by Punitavati, the women saint of the Saivas who also became quite well known across the seas,in south east Asian countries and so forth. 

We have here the birth of the notion of Mukti as PiRappu ARuttal and which is a further refinement of TiruvaLLular’s piRavi peruGkadal niintal, swimming across the seas of life and reaching the shores of the Divine Feet. 

In the following verse she speaks of Siva’s “enbu aRaak koolam” and ‘eriyaaddu’ where both are shapes BEING assumes for the sake of destroying something. As forms of Fire, the agnim illee of Rig Veda, Siva is the Kaalagni Rudra, the immensely strong FIRE that does not allow anything to sustain itself in the world. 

The soul is entangled with the Mummalam, the aaNavam, Kanmam and Maayai and because of which it has to suffer EXISTENCE as such and under normal circumstances the soul cherishes such a way being. However there comes a point of metaphysical maturity where TRUE FREEDOM or Moksa is intuited as one's own possibility and AGAINST WHICH the bodily existence itself becomes painful. Living is begun to be seen as living in a prison, the prison that’s the world and all because of the bodily embodiment and which brings along with it sexuality, being a male or female and yearning for sexual gratification through marriage and so forth. 

It is this 'THROWNESS' into the sexual way of Being-in-the-World and its immense power that makes Punitavati bleed with pains and insurmountable anguish. 

But she also sees a way out.

Siva as Agnim Illee, the Radiant Fire, the Cudar Uru, can singe to ashes all these desires and FREE her and purify her from this way of Being. On account of this, Siva as the wearer of the garland of skulls and resplendent fire become not forms of BEING to be feared but on the contrary to be loved most intimately.

Meaning 

Let HIM be indifferent to my existential anguish by not relieving me from this bodily existence. 
Let Him conceal from me an understanding of the WAY that would lead me unto HIM by not instructing me on it in some ways. 
Whatever it is I remain firm in my LOVE for Him who always discloses Himself as the Brilliant Radiance and who wearing the garland of bones, sports the all destructive Fire. 


Comments:

Punitavati had a fascination for the DESTRUCTIVE aspects of BEING as Siva that she has sung eloquently in her Muutta Tiruppatikam. Having become totally disenchanted with her biological presence in the world as an embodied anma subject to the tribulations of worldly desires that such a bodily existence always brings along with it, she yearns for liberation that would relieve her from being born again and again into the world. She has become aware that it is possible to be but without any inclination towards biological birth and hence the sexual desires that come along with it. As a wife who was deserted by her husband and as one who could not think of another round of domestic life with another man, she just abandons herself to Siva in deep and unshaken LOVE, something that was there in her heart right from early childhood but somehow forgotten. 

The destruction of her family life and hence the drying up of the sexual libido,  is actually the Play of BEING, of Siva the Destroyer to enable her to RECOVER her true Love and which is for Siva. Now that she has recovered it , she will never abandon it, no matter what. There is HOPE and she continuously reminds herself that BEING can take many forms, one of them being an archetype as One who wearing the garland of bones, sports FIRE in His hands,  signaling that only He can singe to ashes the various passions rustling in her heart and without burning  off which she cannot be freed from this endless existential repetition.

A very pertinent question has been raised in response to my claim that historicism may ultimately be the cause of religious fanaticism, a view I noted in one of the verses of Appar. This insight comes to me not only as novel but also very profound, something that caught me by surprise by the depth and universality of its grasp and with which I am still struggling to come to terms with. 


There is an UNDERSTANDING of the issue of human fanaticism where being fixated to the HISTORICAL and hence imprisoned to the notion of IMMORTALITY are brought in to explicate it. Now IMMORTALITY is NOT the same as Mukti and it may be possible that the tremendous emotional power of religious and racial hatred are related to freeing the mind of man from being fixated to the notion of IMMORTALITY so that he would begin to enjoy the genuine sense of Mukti and which would usher in genuine Bakthi, the killing of the Ego and submitting to BEING in all humility. 


This may be the REAL meaning of world wars or at least great wars in addition to the personal crisis we face in life.


Why I say this? Let me explain a bit ( also to myself)


DEATH is Real

Wars are human praxis where the activities are organized to KILL and where also pervades as a real possibility of being killed . Every pretense to contrary is no more there for death is real -- there are comrades dying, innocents being killed and one continues to survive only because one has escaped being killed so far. Those in the thick of the battle do not think of anything else except on how to kill and how to escape being killed. But the poets, philosophers and statesmen directly or indirectly involved in the wars are FORCED to think about DEATH in ways that they cannot pretend that it does not exist. 



But even here we see falsities and the generation of false metaphysics in which death is made IRREAL. The Indian Vedantic thinking is well known for this ( I think). Bagavath Gita while being a metaphysical exposition in the thick of Mahabaratha War, makes killing irreal by noting that the atman is Brahman and as such there is NO KILLING at all, the slayer ad the slain are the same and hence there is NO KILLING in the ordinary sense. Another escape route is provided by Sankaraites Vivartha Vada where everything is seen as kaRpitham, just simply mental constructions of various sorts, mere superimpositions one just as good as another and hence nothing is HISTORICAL really. Vedantic traditions seem to deny historicality and which may be one of the metaphysical strategies to REFUSE to face the reality of death.


Now if such a group of people were to be INSTRUCTED that the notion of IMMORTALITY that they entertain belongs to FALSE METAPHYSICS and that the TRUTH is that it is a transmutation or even a distortion of the genuine sense of Mukti, the TOTAL liberation of the soul from historicality , it appears to me that wars are the only way. The intellectual intransigeantcy and utter disregard for dialogic confrontation with its attendant openness to LEARN will require only wars as a way of INSTRUCTING them and probably this is what is happening now.


Facing Death

Some of the deep metaphysical understanding of Indian Civilization are buried in the PuraNaas which are unfortunately neglected by scholars. Below, Appar deals with the essence of MarkaNdeeya PuraNa, one of the famous Saiva puraNaas. This MarkaNdeeya, the model for the general eternally youthful person where the word means the one who has  seen death ( maar: death, kaNdu: having seen) , confronts death and escapes it by the blessings of BEING. A closer analysis indicates that this mythology draws a distinction between immortality and mukti and that distinction can be grasped only by encountering death face to face.

Kaalan, the God of death appears with a large Black Body as the embodiment of the Dark Stuff , the aaNavam itself , with burning eyes indicating immense anger, with long and warped teeth indicating immense greed, and also as one ready to
chop off the head of the living creatures and kill them mercilessly. Once when he came while MarkaNdeeya, the ever
Youthful was preparing himself to worship the Civalingam, early in the day and with a garland of flowers indicating Pure Love, the Kaalan spread the net of desires , the paacam, to snatch away his soul, making him run and run away from hisworship in the process. BEING on seeing this injustice, disclosed Himself there and kicked away Kaalan and therebyallowed MarkaNdeeya to live without the fear of death. This BEING, the Cataaciva who stands as the world itself and who wearing the brilliant anklets keeps away the death from the creatures, is the ONE who ought to praised and worshipped by all.


Commentary

This mythical theme is also a famous one among the Saivites and rightly so. It brings out the secrets underlying the worship of Civalingam and how it is related to living long and in good health, a theme very much emphasized and explored by the Siddhas who are mainly Saivites. In order to bring out the message hidden in the names and incidences mentioned, let us look at everything closely.

First we see that the Agent of Death is named Kaalan where Kaalam in Tamil means time. Thus the agent of death is TEMPORALITY itself or that which throws the creatures into temporality, historicity. Here it is indicated that DEATH as such belongs to historicity and hence to the temporal ways of Being-in-the World. As long we EXIST in temporality, there comes a moment where such an existence is snatched away from us and that moment being the moment of Death.

But who is really the AGENT?

What is personified as Kaalan is actually the Black One, the true Satanic Force , the Dark Stuff , the aaNavam, that non-sentient thing just as uncreated and eternal ( anaati) as BEING itself.  It is DARK only because it BREEDS DARKNESS, engulfs, if allowed, the whole cosmos in utter Darkness, the simple primordial NOTHINGNESS where nothing is allowed to show itself as there.

Now when its function is thwarted and something is allowed to be AS-THERE, there emerges intense ANGER as indicated by the burning red eyes. When men are overpowered by this FORCE of Death and become Satanic, they become murderously angry when their desire to KILL is NOT allowed to be concluded by being thwarted on the way. This anger is also related to immense GREED, the Greed to EAT UP or consume everything and through that OWN everything as ones own body, i.e. dis-alienate the foreign through devouring, eating up and digesting as one's own. Now when this possibility is denied, then there emerges the MURDEROUS instinct, arikeesan, the desire to kill everything that does not allow being assimilated.

The FORCE against this Agent of Death is BEING who appears as Civalingam and who is worshiped as thus in moments of sun rise and with a garland of fresh flowers i.e. with genuine LOVE at heart. Again this notion of worship is immensely symbolic and we have to wrest out the meaning implicit.The Sun Rise indicates the flooding of the soul with the LIGHT of illumination for it is the metaphysical illuminations that we gain that is capable of driving away the inner darkness and hence the Kaalan itself. Temporality and historicity slip by when metaphysical illuminations are gained.

And this is possible only with LOVE as shown by the offering of garland of flowers. The metaphysical illuminations are granted only for those who have killed their EGO and in all humility LOVE BEING and moved by this bakti also love the whole of humanity.

Now we are ready to understand the message hidden in this mythical theme: it is LOVE unto BEING and hence to all that drives away the Agent of Death and that even when death approaches in terms calamities, diseases, disasters and so forth and thus FRIGHTENS the soul but some how or other such individuals will be rescued from being snatched away by death.

The story of Markandeeya that this verse refers to, has also another message built into it and it is shown by the name of Baalan, the ever youthful MarkaNdeeya. This carries the message that LIVING is a struggle , a struggle between the Death bringing forces and Life renewal forces. The Civalingam, as the embodiment of Natham and Bintu, the conjugation of the MALE and FEMALE is that which ensures eternal youthful vitality though conferring undying sexual virility. This virility is lost when we succumb to the Death bringing forces. However we can RECOVER it through gaining the GRACE of BEING who will burst into the life of the deserving individuals and drive away the DEATH bringing forces through lifting up the soul into realms of TIMELESSNESS where the temporal Kaalan cannot enter. These metaphysical excursions are also life renewing for each such excursion drives away the Dark Stuff within that is ever ready to bring death.

By way of an autobiographical sketch, in this first verse Punitavati discloses that it is excruciating pains in life that has driven her to surrender herself completely to the worship of Lord Siva. 


Siva has played a GAME in her life , disrupted her family life and because of which she resolved not to seek the company of any mortal man but only Siva whom she has been worshiping even during her childhood. However the pull of flesh was strong enough to get married and lead a typical family life. Only divine interference and disruption awakened within her the deeper desire for Moksa, the PiRappu ARuttal, severing from being into endless existential repetition. The ‘idar’ that she talks about here is the pain of assuming an existence as the embodied and which brings along with the sexual desires.

Meaning: 

Though an anma roaming in the metaphysical space, I assumed a bodily form by coming to have a birth and biological nature. And since the days I mastered the language and became capable of effective communication, I have been deeply in Love with you O Lord not knowing the reasons for it all and have sought your Radiant Feet as my resort. O Lord who appears in so many colors and guises and especially as the Blue-throated Niila KaNdan and who is the Lord of all the celestial beings, tell me now when will you relieve me of the troubles that I have to endure by continuing with this biological  endowments by engracing me with the Absolute Releasement ?


Notes: In this first verse itself, Punitavati already outlines the theme, that of being relieved from the biologically constituted worldly existence. Having become disenchanted with the normal existence continuing in the bodily form itself and hence the  biological nature itself becomes immensely painful. This also shows that Punitavati already had an understanding of the HOME COMING, reaching the bottom most metaphysical grounds, on  reaching which there is no rebirth and hence the destruction of all the impulses towards a biological existence, rebirth into the world that can be continuous

Tolkaapiyam is not just grammar book on language but also a grammar book on the soul.



In this video, Sivakumar Sivakumarbegins by explaining the major difference between Tolkaapiyam of Tolkaapiyar ( circ 500 BC ) and Nannul of Pavananthi Munivar ( 13 th century AD ) . He goes further by elaborating that Tolkaapiyam does not just contain the grammar for language as is widely understood but it also contains the grammar needed by the ‘uyir’ or the soul to evolve to higher consciousness. This aspect, regarding the grammar of the soul in Tolkaapiyam has never been understood until Sivakumar rediscovered it, to the best of my knowledge.

Tamil is not just a language, it is a tool to evolve to higher consciousness.



Talk by Sivakumar Ramakrishnan where he explains that Tamil language and culture contains within itself the tools for humans to evolve to higher consciousness.

The awareness of this seems very limited, even among the Tamils. Most of those who claim to champion and protect Tamil language only look at Tamil with a limited vision as a language and pride themselves with it's antiquity and its vastness in literature.  Least are they aware that Tamil contains the science for humans to evolve to higher consciousness. And these Tamil chauvinists, if I may use the word, use Tamil as a tool for political purposes by using the Aryan-Dravidian divide by claiming these hidden sciences as Aryan and has nothing to do with Tamil and Dravidian. They alienate these sciences as do not belong to the Tamils as in their propaganda, these are Aryan in origin and therefore the Tamils should shun and disassociate themselves from these. 


The Aryan-Dravidian divide, though it is a colonial construction, was seized upon by opportunists from both sides of the divide for political gains. The 'Aryan' side used this divide to promote their superiority and look down upon the Dravidian. Rig-Veda, the generally accepted most ancient Sanskrit text which is dated to be around 1500 BC was used to compare with the oldest Tamil text which is Tolkaapiyam, dated to be round 500 BC. Since Rig-Veda is older than Tolkaapiyam, therefore Sanskrit is logically assumed to be older than Tamil and Tamil must have originated from Sanskrit. As a further development of this, all religious practices of the Tamils must have come from the Aryans and it was further claimed that Tamils did not have anything of their own origin. Even Lord Murugan, was given a Sanskrit name of Subramania and so on and it was propagated that Lord Murugan is of Aryan origin too. The Tamils were pictured as an inferior race and were looked down upon.


With this scenario, and knowing the pride of the Tamils towards their mother tongue, the Tamils were badly hurt and some leaders in the Tamil community took a bold step. They disassociated themselves with anything Aryan, including religion and language. Periyar EV Ramasamy's 'Self Respect Movement' played an important part in this disassociation. With regards to religion, the Tamils blindly shunned all the Aryan gods, which means practically all the gods under the Hinduisme umbrella. This lead to the Dravidian movement claiming atheism as their belief system as they did not want to be associated with the Aryan gods. In terms of language, any Sanskrit sounding words were purged from Tamil and Devaneya Pavanar was instrumental in this when he started 'Pure Tamil movement'. The motive was the same, get rid of anything Aryan. In his 1966 Primary Classical language of the World, Devaneya Pavanar a brilliant etymologist from Tamilnadu countered the north Indians assertion of Sanskrit as the mother of all Indian languages including Tamil by claiming that the Tamil language is a proto-world language, being the oldest language of the world, from which all other major languages of the world are derived. He believed that its literature, later called Sangam literature and usually considered to have been written from 200 BC and 300 AD, spanned a huge period from 10000 to 5500 BC to predate Tamil from Sanskrit. This claim is yet to be acknowledged by mainstream scholars and researchers. Devaneya Pavanar's etymological studies on Tamil still stands unshaken and unchallenged till now even by modern etymologists.  In short, atheism became the belief system of the Dravidian political parties and 'Pure Tamil', both of which were heavily promoted among the masses  which was accepted with much fervour among the people.

I want to give an example to show the extend of this disassociation before I move on. For ages,the Tamil new year was celebrated in the Tamil month of Chitirai for a very scientific reason. Now come the Dravidian group and other Tamil chauvinists, who started propagating that Chitirai is not the Tamil new year as it is Aryan and the actual Tamil new year is the ponggal festival which comes in the month of Thai. These chauvinists don't have an iota of scientific knowledge about why the Tamils since time immemorial have been celebrating Chitirai as the Tamil new year. They dont understand the scientific basis behind it. All they know is that Chitirai is Aryan, therefore it is not Tamil, therefore discard. By dicarding, the scientific knowledge behind this is forever lost by the Tamils and it becomes someone else knowledge. What a waste!


This lead to the Tamils ignoring and abandoning the great scientific works of their forefathers on every other field except language. It must be noted that the ancient Tamil literature with regards to belief systems and philosophy largely outnumber the Sanskrit literature. It is also not an exaggeration to say that the Tamil literature can easily overshadow and drown Sanskrit literature in terms of depth of very scientific nature. These  literatures are scientific in the sense that they belong to hermeneutic science where the investigation is on our existence and our destination. Texts such as Tolkaapiyam, Tirukural, Tirumantiram, Civanyaana Botham are in essence hermeneutical, where the objective is 'TRUTH SEEKING'. 


As this disassociation was going on, two brilliant Tamil scholars, one from Sri Lanka by the name of A Sathasivam who is an Oxford trained linguist and another from Malaysia by the name of Loganathan Mutharayan, a mathematician and a graduate of the University of Otago in New Zealand also known as Ullaganar were researching the Sumerian language. Sumerian as it is well established is the oldest known civilisation in the world. The Sumerian language has been well deciphered and it's  literature predates Rig-Veda by a few thousand years. At about the same time, Iravatham Mahadevan was researching the Indus Valley scripts. A Sathasivam and Ullaganar, both of whom made independent research on the Sumerian language, came to a very interesting conclusion, which is Sumerian is Tamil. Iravatham Mahadevan's research proposes a Dravidian origin of the Indus Valley scripts. These findings are very significant as they go contrary to the Aryan Invasion Theory and the propaganda that Tamil roots are in Sanskrit. Ullaganar's research goes further where he proves that Sanskrit is an offshoot of Sumerotamil, therefore Tamil is the base of Sanskrit. This finding turns the tide against the so called Aryan race. It must be mentioned that though Iravatham Mahadevan's research have got some notice in India, the research work of A Sathasivam and Ullaganar has practically gone unnoticed until now though it is very significant to understand the relationship between Sanskrit and Tamil. Another scholar from the United States by the name of Clyde Winters, through his independent research also comes to the conclusion that Sumerian is Tamil with an African origin. 


Now, the Tamils are yet to know the significance of the research findings of A Sathasivam and Ullaganar. By proving that Sumerian is Tamil and Sanskrit is an offshoot of Sumerotamil,  Tamil should gain the rightful place in the Indian history specifically and the world generally. The gods that have been portrayed as Aryan gods, with this new findings are in fact Tamil gods, where you can find the worship of Siva, Sakti, Durga, Murugan and so on in Sumeria. 


While the west developed great sciences in the physical sciences, the Tamils excelled in the metaphysical, where the focus of research was to find the meaning of our existence. And the methodology used by the Tamils was hermeneutical. This hermeneutical orientation of the Tamils can be seen even among the Sumerians. This lead to great developments in the hermeneutical sciences where all the great texts of the Tamils are hermeneutical in nature as mentioned above. 


Now, sadly the Tamils are still caught in the Aryan-Dravidian divide and most are ignorant of the great knowledge found in these ancient Tamil texts. Ullaganar has done a lot of research where he compared the knowledge found in ancient Tamil texts such as Tolkaapiyam, Tirumanthiram and so on and  with the western findings. It must be mentioned that the Tamils were so far advanced compared to western sciences. I provide an example below to illustrate this point:

There are many examples that we can provide, but sufficient to give this one example to illustrate my point. 

The Tamils should stop discarding the idea of looking at Tamil as just a language and delve deep into ancient Tamil texts to see the kind of knowledge that their Tamil forefathers developed. These hidden sciences got to be brought out to the open and Tamils should pride themselves not in the antiquity of Tamil alone but in the sciences that Tamil contains, something that we can hardly find in other languages, not even Sanskrit. These are deep sciences that can easily match modern day discoveries and beyond. Most importantly, do not discard anything in the name of non-Tamil and Aryan origin, when in fact there is nothing which is Aryan. It is all Tamil if you take into consideration of the fact that Sumerian is Tamil and the Indus Valley Civilisation too looks Dravidian. Discarding them is akin to throwing away treasures of immense value that our Tamil forefathers painstakingly discovered for the benefit and well-being of not only the Tamils, their direct descendants  but for all human beings!

To add another point, while these Tamil chauvinists are so enthusiastic in promoting pure Tamil by discarding and purging so called Sanskrit words from Tamil, they are at the same time busy coining new words from English into Tamil! Words like 'Facebook' and 'Whattsapp'. What an irony!


And it is indeed true that Tamil is not just a language, it is a tool to evolve to higher consciousness! And the gods that the Tamils have been praying to are indeed of Tamil origin!


It has always perplexed me from young, when great temples are all over Tamilnadu with its vast ancient texts about gods, how can Tamils be labelled as atheists ?

The Universe as the ultimate holy text of Tamil Agamic Science




Hindus in general struggle for an answer when asked the question : ' What is the holy text of Hinduisme'? The Vedanties will say the Vedas, some will say Tirukural, some Bhagavad Gita and so on. The answer will be so many different holy texts. As the HIndus have many holy texts that they will have difficulty agreeing on a single most authoritative text. 

In this video, Sivakumar gives a single most authoritative text as the answer to this question. He says that the universe and the world we live in is the most authoritative holy text from the Tamil Agamic Science point of view. Though this idea of the universe and the world as the most authoritative text has been around since the days of Tirukural, it was never clearly understood until its recent rediscovery by Ullaganar in the 1990's.

Rene Descartes and Meykandar



In this video, Sivakumar explains about 'corgito ergo sum' of Descartes and a much deeper concept introduced by Meykandar in the 13 th century.

Sivakumar expresses his disappointment about the fact that Meykandar is relatively unknown even among the Tamils, let alone the world. Meykandar, in his magnificent 'Civanyaana Botham', with just 624 Tamil alphabets, explains the whole of our existence. This book is probably the most complete book in hermeneutic science that the world has seen until today.

It must be noted that Meykandar has been forgotten for around 800 years until Ullaganar rediscovered him in the 1990’s in the sense of understanding him completely. Ullaganar has translated Meykandar's book into English which is available from me.
